Varanasi: As many as 27 people, including patients and nurses, were injured in a blast in the AC duct of the emergency OPD of Sir Sunderlal Hospital, Banaras Hindu University on Saturday. The injured people were rushed to the trauma centre and new emergency ward of SSL Hospital. The police sealed the OPD for investigation.
The blast occurred at 12.45pm. It was a horrific moment for the patients and their attendants when the explosion took place with a thunderous sound.
Chaos prevailed all over the hospital. The false ceiling of the ward came down and the glasses of window panes scattered in and outside the OPD. Many patients were present in the ward at that time. The fire brigade was called immediately, though there was no outbreak of fire at the OPD.
BHU vice-chancellor C G Tripathi reached there to take stock of the situation and see the injured persons. Union minister Mahesh Sharma also visited the hospital. The police officials reached there and sealed the emergency OPD.
The head of the department of surgery, Dr Mumtaz Ansari, said patients and nurses present in the OPD sustained injuries.
Bhelupur CO Rajesh Kumar Srivastava said that prima facie it appeared that the blast took place in AC duct. "It is a technical matter. We will take help of experts in investigation," he said.
Twelve of the injured people have been admitted at SSL Hospital and 15 at the trauma centre. "The blast took place with a deafening sound," said Rajesh, who was admitted at new emergency ward of SSL. Jitendra from Azamgarh, who came with a patient, also had similar experience. He was admitted at the new emergency ward, while his relative Yashwant Singh was admitted at the ICU.
The BHU vice-chancellor has formed a committee to hold an inquiry into the incident.
