Cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar, in a recent interview with NDTV sports, stated that discarded opener Gautam Gambhir could still earn a spot into the Indian team considering the way he has been performing in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Kolkata Knight Riders have had a quite productive season thus far with the skipper himself leading from the front. He currently is the Orange Cap holder with 226 runs, which includes two half-centuries. His consistency with the bat has impressed the legend very much.
“Why not? The way he has batted in this competition led from the front and paced his innings alongside different aspects of batsmanship certainly puts him in line for a recall into the Indian team. It’s good to see him bat well,” Gavaskar asserted.
Gavaskar also analyzed the 34-year old’s game and praised his determination to work hard.
“He had gone through a bit of a slump. I think there was a footwork problem. Now, you can see his feet are moving well which means that he has worked very hard and the results are showing,” he added.
He continued, “I think if you have once played for India, you never give up hopes for playing for India again. What’s the point of playing in Ranji Trophy and IPL if the ambition of playing for India is not there?”
It was three years ago in 2013 when Gambhir last played limited overs cricket for the national team. His last appearance for the Indian team came in 2014 when India played England at The Oval Test.
